another culture taught me to respect and communicate better with people. I realize that there is potential in everyone, you never know who you are talking to. Therefore I find that I enjoy talking to everyone. As a boy we had numerous pets, including Budgies, homing Pigeons, Fish, among many other pets. My brother had budgies and I always thought that they were bright and pretty. In 1990 I found Ron Rebham. I drove to his home and found amazing birds bigger than I had ever seen. Ron took me through the process of showing a budgie. He taught me what to feed the birds, how to soak seed, feed soft food, nutrition and maintenance to keeping and breeding Budgies. I had already read several books and couldn't wait to get started. I bought six birds and took the long drive home. I didn't have any real goals. I just wanted to see if I could breed Budgies. I learned about the different variety of mutations but I didn't have any plan to show my birds. I started to find people and made a few friends. However there were no Budgerigar clubs in my area to encourage and keep me going. Three years went by and then we moved. We brought the birds along with us but soon realized that we didn't have the space, a sad day for me. I sold my birds. I now have a family and my situation has changed for the better so I decided that after all these years I would start over. I went on line to try and find Ron Rebham again. I found his name in the Maryland Budgerigar Society website and decided to join their club. Then I joined the American Budgerigar Society. I was a prior member. I met Sally O'Dwyer at the Maryland site and she helped introduce me to fellow members who might be able to help me get started with new birds. I bought 4 birds from Kitty Newman, and 2 birds from Stuart Sacks. These are Champion Breeders. Savannah, my daughter and I decided that it would be fun to drive the 450 miles from home to our first ABS sanctioned show in North Carolina. Leon Saad was the judge a man from South Africa. We had friendly conversation that took me way back to my upbringing in Rhodesia, Africa. I met and talked to many people at the show. I asked many of the same questions to different breeders. I wanted to compare answers. Everyone was helpful and honest. David Hyatt took particular interest in seeing that I understood what I was doing. David helped me by answering my dumb questions. We have conversed over the phone on a regular basis and David has been a mentor to me since that time. Thank you David. To date I have bread 20 baby's. I now have 15 hens and 12 cocks give or take. My barheads are too young to tell the sex. I have lost 10 baby's of 29 that have hatched. I have made mistakes and have learned much. I hope I don't repeat those mistakes it is disheartening. Many of my hens are young 2007 birds. Next year should be a good year for me. My goal here is to show my strengths and weaknesses as I travel down this path. I want this site to be current and interesting. I want to keep you the viewer informed as I go along. I will start showing my birds in the Novice Division next year. Wish me luck and follow along with me as I make choices here on this site. Please send feed back, and help me along... |
