| I enjoy long drives especially to places I have never been. Although my drive to Berryville, VA took me 2 1/2 hours there are many people this year that drove much further. Some drove from Georgia, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and as far as Texas. Driving through farmland and ranches made this trip memorable. I especially enjoyed driving over rolling hills bordered by wooden fences with beautiful horses. Seeing Deer off the side of a rolling hill made my drive amazing. I made it to the VFW hall a little late and things were well organized. |
| When you walk through the door you notice show cages filled with super Budgies like you have never seen before. Some exhibitors bring 50 birds or as many as five. It is always great to see people come such a long way to help support the show. This is my third show this season. I enjoy moving through the room looking at different birds from the normal lite green, to a exciting variety of rare birds. I have noticed that even though everyone is in competition you still find helpful people pulling spots or helping fill out forms to lending tools that help make the birds look their best. Shows are a great place to buy birds that experienced breeders bring and there is always a rush to find the best bird to compliment your Aviary. |
| Shows use raffle items donated to help raise funds that pay for the expenses. There is always a table full of raffle birds. This year birds were donated from Champion breeders across the country and even a pair of birds from the DePina line in South America. There are all sorts of opportunities here and you could tell. It is fun to watch the bidding but more than that is the money raised $900 this year. Five dollars buys you a ticket to win your bird the more you buy the better your chances. I won a bird at the Sandhills show and have already had one successful round I am happy with. |
I need hens and the best hens I can find. My goal is to buy the best birds I can afford. I look at who is winning and try to create several lines in my stud that can help me build a better quality bird. The ABS has a standard of perfection that we all strive to attain. I look at the strengths and weaknesses in my stud and do my best to come up with a better quality bird. People are very helpful and eager to help beginners get started and stay in the hobby. Everyone has an opinion and I often ask different breeders the same questions to compare their answers. It is easy for beginners to start with too many different variety of birds but it is better to keep things simple while you gain experience. I met David Hyatt at a show in North Carolina at the Sandhills Budgerigar Society show. David has been an encouragement and a mentor to me by teaching me about the good and bad aspects to breeding. He is honest in reminding me that this hobby may be tough at times and things can be disheartening. |
