| I've been thinking these days about what it is that I love about these birds. I think it is the interaction, the bright colors and all the details that go along with raising and maintaining these birds. I would say that probably the most fascinating thing to me thought is the genetics. You see a bird but there is so much to that bird. There are all those good and bad genes. How about temperament, is that an important aspect when your are in the selection process of breeding. How do you decide which of those points are important in the overall picture? I think a beginner gets caught up in the joy of breeding baby's, because it is exciting to see what you will get from the pair that you selected. What can you learn from that selection? I have been so excited about what is to come, then been disappointed when I check in the nest box and find that a baby has been crushed. So what keeps you going? I think that I have this never die mentality that there is always a way around a problem. I have found that often it is my mistake that is the reason for the loss of a bird. I often make a frantic call to a mentor who will often walk me through that desperate situation calmly. I want to learn from every mistake and not be beat down and discouraged. There are so many things to know about this hobby and therefore the reason why it is so important to have goals. My goal is to start with the best birds I can afford and build on the good points of what I have. I'm speaking mostly physically here, based on the ABS standard of perfection. I want to build from 3 or 4 of the top breeders in my region. It is important as a beginner to understand what that look is. You can look at a picture but there is so much more to going and seeing a quality bird from a bird show. Look at the birds up on the top bench and ingrain in your mind what you see. Talk it over with those breeders and get a good idea of what you are looking for. Note that in the MBS Show section in this website you will find pictures of what some of the top birds in this country look like. What a great start but even better to spend a couple hours at a breeders home. I have found most breeders happy to share their love of these birds and more that happy to help someone in the hobby especially a beginner. I consider this rare, try getting a competitive show dog breeder to help you succeed. UN-EDITED ARTICLE IN PROGRESS |
